Assistant Professor Economic History and International Relations
Education (60 percent)|
The candidate is expected to perform teaching and supervising tasks in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in history. These multidisciplinary programmes aim to develop an understanding of present societies through courses about global history, economic and business history, international relations and socio-cultural history. Students explore both the uniqueness of certain events and long-term patterns. Courses on theory and methods further ensure that they become aware of different approaches and methods in the historical discipline. Electives on urban history, business history of fashion, text & context, and historical games prepare students to analyse modern society as a highly qualified graduate with broad academic knowledge. Rotterdam’s unique approach to history is clearly visible in years 2 and 3 of the multidisciplinary Bachelor’s programme and the Master History of Society. Since 2017 the history department collaborates in an Erasmus Mundus Programme with the Universities of Glasgow, Barcelona and Göttingen. The Assistant Professor will also be involved in this international programme.
Research (40 percent)
The Chair Economic History and International Relations focuses on processes of regional economic integration and transnational relations. While in the 19th and 20th centuries politicians were often nationalistic, companies became multinational or had intense international relations. The aim of this programme is to analyse the tension between these two developments, including the history of economic and political integration and disintegration. Linked with that is the question why certain economic activities became important in specific economic regions and then disappeared again. The research combines applied economic theory and theories of international relations with qualitative and quantitative history, and geographical information systems. The candidate’s research focus has to fit within this programme.
- A PhD degree in History or closely related discipline.
- A broad knowledge and mastery of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- International publications in the field of Economic History and International Relations.
- Proven experience with qualitative and quantitative research into the Creative Industries.
- Prior teaching experience and the proven ability to inspire students.
- Excellent proficiency in spoken and written Dutch and English.
- Non-Dutch speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF).
- Strong team-playing, organizational and communication skills.
- Management skills.
- Experience in international academic settings.

Conditions of employment
Employment starts August 1, 2018. The initial contract will be running for a term of 1 year, which – depending on performance – will be extended for an indefinite duration.
The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CLA) of the Dutch Universities. Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 12 (CAO NU), with a minimum of €4.210,- and maximum €5.405,- gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract. Deadline: 14 February 2018.
The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek.
