Assistant professor in Latin American Studies with a focus on Gender, Violence and/or Migration
The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in either humanities or social sciences, and has proven affinity with interdisciplinary approaches and collaboration. The candidate should have extensive research experience in Latin America (with proven fluency of Spanish and/or Portuguese). The candidate should preferably be an active and ambitious early career researcher with an international publication record and demonstrated ability to obtain research funding. In addition to team spirit, the candidate’s research expertise should be connected with the research foci of CEDLA and ARTES. Areas of specialization:
- Gender, sexuality and intersectionality in Latin America; and
- Inequality, conflict, (in-)security and violence in Latin America; or
- Tourism, migration and other transnational/transcultural themes.
The successful candidate must have substantial experience in university teaching and proven flexibility in teaching topics beyond her/his own research focus. The candidate will teach BA courses on gender and on academic skills, will contribute to other courses of the CEDLA BA and MA programmes, and is expected to develop new courses addressing issues related to inequality, violence and transnational/transcultural themes. In addition, the candidate will supervise BA, MA and PhD theses, and tutor BA and MA students.
The candidate will also contribute to various administrative functions and public activities of CEDLA, engage in international academic networks, and develop new activities and cooperation, taking into account the increasing connections between Latin America, the city of Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands and Europe.
- conducting independent research, resulting in academic publications in peer-reviewed international journals or edited volumes;
- acquiring external funding for research;
- contributing to the research activities of CEDLA and ARTES;
- contributing to research networks and other forms of academic and science-society cooperation;
- developing, coordinating and delivering courses in the BA and MA programmes Latin American Studies and/or other programmes;
- supervising BA, MA and PhD theses;
- contributing to the development of other courses and teaching programmes;
- taking part in committees and working groups, and carrying out departmental administrative tasks.
- An international research network in the research area concerned;
- research output commensurate with the level of the position;
- demonstrable ability and ambition to obtain external research grants;
- experience with different forms and levels of delivering university teaching, at BA and MA level;
- broad teaching skills, relevant to multiple departments in the Faculty of Humanities and possibly the Faculty of Social Sciences or Amsterdam University College;
- excellent organizational experience and skills;
- the Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO), or willingness to acquire this within the first two years;
- team spirit and versatility at all levels, capable of interdisciplinary cooperation;
- teaching and administrative duties require native or near-native fluency in Dutch and English; appointments are subject to the candidate’s proficiency in both; non-native Dutch speakers must achieve an active and passive command of Dutch within two years. Passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language (NT2), programme II, is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The contract is initially temporary for a period of two years. Subject to a positive assessment, it will be converted to a permanent contract. The start of the contract is scheduled for 1 August 2020.
The scope of the employment contract is 32 hours per week (0,8 FTE). The UFO profile of assistant professor applies to this position (salary scale 11/12, depending on relevant work experience).The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities applies.

The Centre of Latin American Studies and Documentation (CEDLA) is a renowned interdisciplinary research centre, which is part of the Department of History, European Studies and Religious Studies in the Faculty of Humanities. CEDLA’s research programme aims to produce new knowledge on the reshaping of Latin American society within the context of crisis and transformation. CEDLA is part of the Faculty of Humanities and at the same time has a Social Science orientation. This SSH interdisciplinarity is visible in the centre’s expertise, methods and networks. CEDLA staff members are particularly active in the field of scientific cooperation and obtain many research grants and externally funded PhD projects. In addition to research, education (BA, MA, PhD) and documentation, CEDLA provides a series of interfaculty, national and international centre functions, promoting knowledge about and relationships with the region.
