Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary Art History
The growing number of students, investments in research and committed Faculty and University support enable the Section of Art history to hire a full-time assistant professor (Universitair Docent) in Modern and Contemporary Art History. We are looking for an engaged scholar who is able to relate modern and contemporary art to the challenges facing contemporary and future societies and who values and expands cooperation with museums, art spaces and the wider heritage field.
The candidate teaches in Bachelor Art History, in the Master track Modern and Contemporary Art with a focus on curating and mediating, collecting and criticism and in the Research master Art History which focuses more on global, digital and material-technical perspectives.
- a PhD degree in Art History with a focus on modern and contemporary art;
- thorough knowledge of theories, criticism, histories and methodologies in relation to modern and contemporary art as demonstrated by scholarly output as well as the organisation of symposia, possibly also exhibitions or other art events and the dissemination of knowledge in a wider social field;
- connections with museums, art spaces and heritage institutions;
- experience with academic teaching, the willingness to teach on all educational levels, including BA, MA, and RMA; and the willingness and curiosity to teach more general courses within the field of art history at BA and MA level;
- a clear teaching philosophy, briefly outlined in a teaching philosophy statement in which the candidate reflects on teaching beliefs and practices, and what skills and knowledge are brought to an education team. This should be included in the letter of motivation;
- the ability to take up administrative tasks regarding teaching, and the ability and willingness to play a role in the management of the programs offered by the section Art History and/or the Department;
- the readiness to engage with a wider audience and to assist in developing the impact of research beyond the university and/or a record of contributing to team science;
- a supportive attitude towards colleagues, with an open mind towards creative forms of exchange and cooperation, contributing to the academic life of the department and strengthening the ties of the Art History section with other relevant partners within the University. an innovative research theme and strategy, for an assistant-professor function, outlined in a research statement included in your letter of motivation.
Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one.
Candidates are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English; non-Dutch-speaking candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.
