Assistant Professor Rural and Environmental History (Tenure Track)

Job description

We are looking for an ambitious historian devoted to research and education in social science history. As an Assistant Professor you will participate in our research program on global history. Within this context you will develop your own research line and you will lecture BSc and MSc courses (e.g. Globalization in Historical Perspective, Demography, Food History) to students both in social and natural sciences at Wageningen University and co-supervise PhD-students. In addition, you are expected to contribute actively to the acquisition of research grants and research projects.

Requirements

We ask for a candidate who:

  • has a PhD in the field of economic, social or demographic history
  • is familiar with social science theories on long-term development
  • has published in internationally refereed scientific journals
  • has strong didactic and presentation skills and enthusiasm for teaching and working with (international) students in a broad range of programmes
  • holds a University Teaching Qualification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs) or is prepared to obtain one
  • has an international scientific network
  • has the ability to acquire externally financed projects
  • has good organisational skills

Conditions of employment

We offer Tenure Track as a career trajectory to excel academically in research and teaching. We wish to attract scientific talent and to stimulate and support their development. We initially offer a fixed-term, 7 year contract for 38 hours per week (fulltime), which upon positive evaluation based on criteria elaborated in the University’s Tenure Track policy, can lead to a permanent employment contract.

The yearly salary before taxes ranges between € 50,758 to € 78,935 in case of fulltime employment as an assistant professor, depending on experience and expertise. In line with the University’s Tenure Track policy, a career path consists of a number of successive steps from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and subsequently to Professor.

In addition we offer:

The Rural and Environmental History Group is an ambitious and internationally oriented team of historians that operates within the Economics Section of the Department of Social Sciences of Wageningen University. Our mission is to study patterns of long term growth, inequality and sustainable development from a global perspective. We are particularly interested in long-term rural development in relationship to changing environmental and global economic conditions.
Our research focuses mostly, but not exclusively, on the modern era (c. 1800-2000). Our research is characterised by the combined application of quantitative, qualitative and comparative historical research methods. We draw theoretical inspiration from the social sciences. Archival research and data collection form a central part of our research. We value the valorisation of research results and strive to reach out to academic as well as public audiences.
