Assistant Professor (UD) in Ancient History (1.0 FTE)

The chair group of Ancient History has a vacancy for an Assistant Professor with a starting date of September 2022. We are looking for a candidate with a strong and innovative research agenda to complement our current interests. We are primarily looking for a specialist in Roman imperial / late Roman history. We would particularly like to hear from applicants with research interests in contacts with cultures beyond the confines of the Graeco-Roman world.
The chair group of Ancient History teaches at all levels in the programmes of History, Classics as well as in the interdisciplinary Research Master Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and on a regular basis in the Groningen Honours college, University College, and several interdisciplinary Minor Programmes.
Our research focuses on the Greek world from the Classical to the Roman period and on the Roman Republic and Late Antiquity. Thematically, our current interests include cultural history (especially Greek religion and festivals), political history (Classical Athenian democracy and law, the Greek polis in Hellenistic and Roman periods, leadership in Late Antiquity, Roman imperialism) and social and economic history (colonization, landscape history and the history of connectivity). We have expertise in the fields of Greek and Roman archaeology, Greek epigraphy, spatial approaches and digital humanities. Much of our research is explicitly interdisciplinary. There is a structural engagement and collaborative research with the programmes of Archaeology, Classics, Religious Studies and digital humanities. The chair group hosts innovative research projects on Greek festival networks in the Hellenistic world (http://www.connectingthegreeks.com), and spatial narratives (http://deepmappingsanctuaries.org/). We are currently developing new projects on Greek epigraphy, the role of writing in Greek religion, the integration of the Greek world and the world of Judaism in the Roman empire, and Roman colonization and land use.
The chair group is an active participant within OIKOS, the National Research School in Classical Studies in The Netherlands, and in the Anchoring Innovation Research agenda (http://www.anchoringinnovation.nl).
