International Congress History, Heritage(s) and Innovation – gazing at the tourist itineraries between the 19th and the 21st centuries

16-17 July 2020, Cascais (Portugal)

The research group Economy, Society, Heritage, and Innovation of the Institute of Contemporary History (NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities) and the Cascais City Council are organising the International Congress History, Heritage(s) and Innovation – gazing at the tourist itineraries between the 19th and the 21st centuries, that will take place on July 16th and 17th at the Centro Cultural de Cascais.

We invite researchers from different academic areas to participate in a transdisciplinary discussion that among others will focus on different tourist gazes (Urry, 1990) and on the new travelling practices. Possible approaches might be as follows:

  • Can we represent ourselves without the others?, or the (new) contemporary tourist identities,
  • Food history and gastronomic narratives,
  • Ethics and sustainability in contemporary tourism – a need or a strategy?
  • History of tourism,
  • Innovation and tourism: good practices in tourism development,
  • The new tourism heritage representations in the 21st century,
  • Tourism landscapes – tradition vs. modernity.
  • Tourist representations and practices as ideological tools,
  • Tourism and empire(s).
