Curator of Western Religion and Subject Librarian of Religious Studies

Who are we looking for?

• You will be a specialist in the History of Religions in Europe and in the written traditions represented in books, manuscripts and digital sources. We are looking for someone with ample working experience with collections in a university library, and preferably also in a museum;
• you will have at least a master’s degree or equivalent knowledge and experience in a relevant discipline, as well as excellent communication skills. You have built up an outstanding record of research and scholarship;
• you will enhance and develop research. You will enhance the presentation, use and interpretation of the collections both through the collections database and online tools and devices, as well as through acquisitions and collection documentation;
• you will develop a vision of how to actively promote the collections an important resource for education and research and will be committed to public promotion and engagement with, and of the collection;
• you are able to communicate fluently in Dutch and/or in English and, if only fluent in English, you will have the capability to acquire Dutch at the appropriate level to work in a Dutch language environment.

Experience and skills

• Minimum of three years of working experience in a university library, museum and/or academic institution;
• demonstrable scholarly achievement in the field as described;
• excellent social and communication skills.

Knowledge and education

• MA (required) and, preferably a PhD in a relevant discipline;
• expertise in a specific field relating to the History of Religions and the Comparative Study of Religion and preferably also to Book History;
• relevant international scholarly, practitioner based and/or library network;
• knowledge of Digital Humanities;
• fluency in Dutch and English, or a commitment to improve it in either languages to a sufficient working level within 1 year,

Knowledge of Latin is highly recommended.

You will initially be appointed on a one-year contract, with the possibility of transition to a permanent appointment at the end of this period. We offer a 0.8 FTE position. Salary will be commensurate with experience according to the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. This position is scale 10-11 (€2.709 to €4.978) for a full-time position of 38 hours per week.

As Curator you will be part of the curatorial team of the Allard Pierson, responsible for the collections of the University of Amsterdam (0.5 FTE).

The collections in this field belong to the most extensive and important in the university libraries of the Netherlands. The multitude of subjects and the diversity of forms of expression make these collections an important source for education and research in all sorts of areas, such as the history of religious communities and in particular the Mennonites, the Lutherans, the followers of Hendrik Niclaes, Jean de Labadie, Antoinette Bourignon and many others; the reformation, the religious history of the Netherlands and especially Amsterdam, the art of printing with all its clandestine prints and the Golden Age.

As Subject Librarian you will be part of the Library Education and Research service team, responsible for the collection management Religious Studies and communication and education on behalf of students (BA , (R)MA) and staff members Religious Studies of the University of Amsterdam (0.3 FTE).

The BA and (Research) Master programme in Religious Studies focusses on the history and present-day religious and spiritual diversity in Europe and its wider Mediterranean, Eurasian and Transatlantic context. The programmes focus on the processes of religious diversification in different socio-cultural contexts with particular attention to the Abrahamic religions and Western Esotericism. It trains students both in the historical and the empirical study of religious cultures and countercultures, including the interdisciplinary study of ideas, narratives, practices, institutions and their interactions in their social, cultural and political contexts.
