The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and the Royal Conservatoire (KC) together constitute the University of the Arts The Hague (Hogeschool der Kunsten Den Haag / HdK). The HdK offers a wide range of art programmes to around 1800 students, from bachelors, masters, a double degree to PhD options in conjunction with Leiden University. It also provides unique programmes for pupils and students in combination with primary and secondary education. The HdK is located at two sites in the centre of The Hague.

The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) educates artists and designers since 1682. BA Textile & Fashion
Offering two disciplines simultaneously within one and the same department creates a unique profile in design education. By embracing their interdependence and possibilities in overlap this provides opportunities for the development of versatile transdisciplinary practices. Combining artistic with theoretical research, students are encouraged to develop a very personal and critical viewpoint when designing solutions for rapidly evolving realities that are becoming more and more aware of their contemporary socio-political, economic and cultural responsibilities.

The curriculum builds around annual focal points: year 1 Play, year 2 Ground, year 3 Connect, year 4 Transform.

Design is at the core of the program, supported by extensive courses in knowledge, skills and communication. The foundations for a comprehensive framework of references are laid out through theoretical and analytical courses like Research & Discourse, Art History, Textile & Fashion History and Textile & Fashion in Context.

Furthermore, the program offers its international student population the opportunity to expand and deepen their interests through an academy-wide individual study trajectory with various elective courses. It allows each individual to develop their strengths to the fullest within an inclusive work environment, where everyone can feel respected and safe.

The Textile & Fashion Department is looking for a

Tutor Textile & Fashion History

for our first and second bachelor year

Until recently both Art and Textile & Fashion History was focussing mainly on Western cultures and perspectives for historical references and artefacts. Recent global developments such as the Black Lives Matter movement forced an active discussion around the urge for decolonizing these perspectives and the necessity for emphasis on diversity and inclusion. We consider textiles and fashion design disciplines that actually deeply appreciate and celebrate our uniqueness and diversity.

With this in mind this course aims to study the world-wide history of textile and fashion. The many designs, materials, techniques, colors and expressions used in different continents, cultures and moments in time will be analyzed and discussed. The course provides an understanding of the past as a historical framework for relevant and innovative current and future practices.

Assessments include applying and reporting academic research in order to practice making trans-historic connections, and to get familiar with relevant literature, libraries and collections.

The course emphasizes the importance of discussion through collective as well as individual in-class feedback sessions. As such, students learn to analyse each other’s work and develop the vocabulary to verbalize their own.

Your profile
You are an inspiring tutor with extensive knowledge of the history of textile and fashion design from an anthropological, cross-cultural perspective. You are able to connect its diverse manifestations throughout time, place and culture. You are familiar with art education and its plurality in student population. You possess excellent communication skills in English writing and conversations.

What do we offer?
You will typically teach half a day per week for 34 weeks per year. A flexible arrangement of teaching hours might be necessary occasionally. We expect the contract to start on September 1, 2021. The contract is for one year. It can be renewed. The position is classified as pay scale 11 under the Collective Agreement for Higher Professional Education (CAO HBO). Furthermore, we offer a holiday allowance of 8%, a fixed end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, holiday leave, and provide good study- and development opportunities.
