Director of the Centre for the Social History of Limburg (SHCL) / Extraordinary Chair in Comparative Regional History in particular of Limburg and Bordering Regions, Department of History, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University

The director-chairholder is in charge of some 20 staff (11 fte) employed in the research, archive and library sections of the SHCL. S/he directs research and collection policies of the SHCL, while, as extraordinary professor in Comparative Regional History in particular of Limburg and Bordering Regions, establishing and sustaining close ties with research and teaching at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) of Maastricht University (UM). S/he is accountable to the board of the SHCL Foundation.

Requirements

The candidate should have a quality record in research and leadership, as well as a strong research identity which is recognized as such by the field; s/he has a relevant international network and is open to interdisciplinary approaches. This research and leadership expertise is demonstrated by the following: a PhD degree in history, international peer reviewed publications on original work in highly regarded journals within the field of social economic, political or cultural history; monographs and edited volumes published by prestigious (university) presses; acquisition of funding from national, European and other research funding agencies; and a track-record in (co-)supervision of PhD students.

The selected candidate will have an important administrative role as director of the SHCL. Organizational and management expertise are deemed crucial. S/he is expected to be a genuine coach and leader, as well as a team player, with a broad academic interests and an open, effective management style.

It is to the candidate’s credit to have demonstrable interest in regional history, training in information management, and experience in digital humanities. Proficiency in Dutch and English, both orally and in writing, is required, while proficiency in German and French is a plus.

The candidate should be an experienced and enthusiastic teacher with proven ability in thesis supervision and teaching international classrooms. S/he is able to stimulate student learning and to maximize student participation within the UM system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL).

In view of recruitment policies and the composition of the staff at SHCL, FASoS, and the UM in general, female candidates with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment.

Conditions of employment

The director-professor will have a fulltime appointment with the SHCL. 0.20 fte of this appointment pertains to the professorship at FASoS. As to the legal position of the appointee, the SHCL applies the provisions for employees of the Province of Limburg. The salary scale is level 14 for 0.80 fte and level 16 for 0.20 fte, in accordance with the provincial collective labour agreement (CAO provincies).

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has about 250 staff members, and about 1,600 students. More than 76% of the students are non-Dutch (64 different nationalities). All programmes are offered in English and some are also offered in Dutch. FASoS offers three 3-year bachelor’s programmes: Arts and Culture, European Studies and Digital Society. It also offers eight different 1-year master’s programmes and two 2-year research master’s programmes.

Research is organised around four programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in the historic city centre of Maastricht.

Centre for the Social History of Limburg
As a centre for research and documentation of the history of Limburg and its bordering regions, SHCL is affiliated with Maastricht University (see: http://www.shclimburg.nl).  The director holds a part-time professorship in comparative regional history at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Maastricht University, established by SHCL. The SHCL offices are located at the premises of the Limburg Regional Historical Centre in the historical inner city of Maastricht.
