On Thursday 23 September 2021 at 4.30 pm (UTC+1), Uğur Ümit Üngör will hold his inaugural lecture Organized Destruction: The Logic of Mass Violence in Genocide in the Aula of the University of Amsterdam. The oration will also be the NIOD Annual Lecture in Holocaust and Genocide Studies 2021. Registration is not required. The event can also be followed via livestream. Genocide is an ongoing and persistent phenomenon in very diverse human societies throughout history. More than 75 years after the Holocaust and the Genocide Convention, genocide is as relevant as ever on a global level. In his inaugural address, Üngör will discuss the concept of genocide, the research on perpetrators and perpetration, and mass violence in Syria and Iraq. The address will be delivered in English.

Uğur Ümit Üngör is Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Amsterdam and NIOD. His main areas of interest are the global history and sociology of genocide and mass violence, with a particular focus on the modern and contemporary Middle East. His publications include Genocide (Amsterdam University Press, 2016, ed.), Confiscation and Destruction: The Young Turk Seizure of Armenian Property (Continuum, 2011), the award-winning The Making of Modern Turkey: Nation and State in Eastern Anatolia, 1913-1950 (Oxford University Press, 2011), and most recently Paramilitarism: Mass Violence in the Shadow of the State (Oxford University Press, 2020).
