Empire of the Senses. Sensory Knowledge, Communication and Cultural Encounters in the Early Americas

Graduate Lecture by Daniela Hacke, Professor of Early Modern History at Freie Universität Berlin

What role did the senses play in the formation and development of empires? Daniela Hacke is an expert in sensory history and emotion studies. Her work offers exiting new perspectives to empire studies: on the way European imperialism was constructed, operated, implemented and, sometimes, counteracted by rich and complex new sensory frameworks in the diverse contexts of early America.
In her lecture Daniela Hacke will discuss how sensory perception helped frame cultural encounters, colonial knowledge, and political relationships, elucidating different ways in which the expansion of rival European empires across the Americas involved a vast interconnected range of sensory experiences and practices.
