Professor Cathie Carmichael (University of East Anglia) will hold the NIOD annual lecture in Holocaust and Genocide Studies 2019 on Thursday 19 September. Her lecture is titled The Causes and Consequences of Genocide – Lessons from the Balkans.

In her lecture, Professor Carmichael will examine three historical eras where acts of ethnically-inspired violence took place. In particular, the lecture will cover events in the (modern) states of Serbia, Croatia as well as Bosnia and Hercegovina. Much of the focus will be on nationalism, religious divisions, leadership, the collapse of complex societies during war, terrorism and border security.

In the first part of the lecture, Professor Carmichael will look at the Balkan and First World Wars (1912-18) and the way in which these conflicts created political problems which proved almost impossible to overcome. In the second part she will look at the Second World War and Holocaust (1941-45) before considering the impact of the Balkan Wars of the 1990s. Finally, she will examine whether there are any general lessons to be drawn about political culture, propaganda, the role of the individual, the destruction of material culture and buildings, and conclude by looking at the price of ‘victory’.
