Conference nationalism and protectionism A global historical approach

9 nov 2018
Van 13:00 - 18:00uur
Erasmus University Rotterdam, Campus Woudestein

We are pleased to invite you to celebrate with us the 40th anniversary of the History Department at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Established in 1978, our department emphasized a social scientific approach to history, called “History of Society” / “Maatschappijgeschiedenis”. Although the name of our teaching and research programmes has changed into “History”, like other history departments in the Netherlands, our department continues to have a unique character. We focus not so much on the chronology from ancient times to modern history, but on themes with contemporary relevance from a long-term perspective. Moreover, our teaching and research is inspired by the use of theories and methodologies from other disciplines, such as economics, sociology, cultural studies and philosophy.

Generally, our research and teaching programmes aim to improve the understanding of current developments within societies around the globe by analyzing both long-term processes and the specific experiences of people in the past.

The focus on such contemporary themes also characterizes this festive conference. Prominent scholars will discuss a topical theme of tremendous global consequences: they will reflect on the possible drivers of the current rise of nationalism and protectionism in a globalizing world. Apparently, this renewed tendency towards nationalism and protectionism seems to be the result of the financial crisis in 2008, recent terror attacks and the current refugee crisis. But to what extent are there
other long-term causes involved such as the historical inequality between peoples, classes and countries, or the impact of the free market ideology? What are the economic, political and moral consequences for society today?

You are most kindly invited to participate in this event.
