The history of international NGOs: questioning our assumptions?

This talk questions the assumed periodizations in NGO (NonGovernmental Organizations) history. What factors explain the NGOs development and the trajectories they have taken? Davies makes recommendations for areas where further research is needed.

About Thomas Davies (City University London). Dr Davies’ work bridges historical and theoretical perspectives on world politics. His publications have addressed non-governmental organizations, global governance, transnational history, internationalist theory, disarmament diplomacy, and social movements including the peace movement and nonviolence. He is the author of NGOs: A New History of Transnational Civil Society (New York: Oxford University Press, 2014), and The Possibilities of Transnational Activism: The Campaign for Disarmament between the Two World Wars (Boston: Martinus Nijhoff, 2007). Dr Davies also established the Project on the Evolution of International Non-Governmental Organizations.
