Troy in Film12 mar 2019
Van 20:00 - 21:30uur
In cooperation with Amsterdam Troy Research Team
‘Iliad’, the epic poem attributed to Homer, describes the tale of Troy, a city deeply rooted in classical European heritage and memory. Our obsession with Troy is fortified by more than a century of theatrical depictions in film. Our understanding and representation of Troy is distinctive to style, political message and reflecting image of the age in which the film is produced.
For over a hundred and fifty years, Troy has been one of the best-known archaeological excavation sites in the world. Parallel to the theatrical translations of Iliad we can ask ourselves; what have we been hoping to find at the excavations of Troy? Since 2016 the University of Amsterdam takes part in an ongoing collaboration with Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University to disclose the archaeology of the archaeology of Troy. In support of the Amsterdam Troy Team of 2019, we proudly present an evening through the epic cinematography of Troy guided by an illustrious panel of experts in cinema, Greek classicism and archaeology.
