Workshop on ‘Researching (Post)colonial Migration’

19 jan 2018
Van 13:00 - 17:00uur
Universiteit van Amsterdam

On Friday, 19 January 2018, Peter van Dam and Liz Buettner of the Modern History Research Group at the University of Amsterdam invite you to a workshop on ‘Researching (Post)colonial Migration’ that features presentations by three leading international scholars. With presentations by Peo Hansen (Linköping University), Olivier Esteves (Lille III University), and Johannes Paulmann (Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte, Mainz).

How has decolonisation influenced the ways in which European citizens and residents, old and new, approached their lives? This workshop explores the ways in which the legacy of empires and their end has shaped migration and responses to it in post-war Europe. What can we learn about colonialism and its aftermath by looking at the lives and experiences of migrants? How have states attempted to regulate migration individually and as members of the European Union?  How have people in Europe reacted to these developments?  During this workshop, the featured speakers will shed light on these questions and address key themes and prevalent approaches. This will be followed by a wider discussion based on the audience’s questions and reflections of the participants.

Time and Date: Friday 19 January, 13:00-17:00.

All are welcome, but please register beforehand by e-mailing p.h.vandam@uva.nl by Tuesday 16 January.
