Lecturer in the History of Early Modern Philosophy (0.2 fte, 12 months)

ESPhil’s educational programmes offer a broad range of philosophy courses, including courses with a historical focus at both Bachelor and Master levels. The focus of history courses at ESPhil lies on the early modern period. For the spring period of the academic year 2022-2023, ESPhil is looking for a temporary lecturer in two English language courses in the first and third year of the Bachelor programmes Philosophy and Philosophy of a Specific Discipline.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Your primary responsibility will be to offer the following two courses:

  • High Enlightenment II, Bachelor 1, block 3B (half March to half April 2023)
  • History of Political Thought, Bachelor 3, block 4A (end of April to end of May 2023)

Both courses are open to Fulltime and Parttime Philosophy students as well as students in the Philosophy of a Specific Discipline (Second Degree) Ba-program for students in other programs at Erasmus University. This means the Ba 1 course High Enlightenment II is bound to attract as many as 200+ students, whilst the Ba 3 course is expected to attract between 30 to 40 students. In the Ba 1 course, support will be offered by tutors from ESPhil’s Tutor Academy for staffing tutorials as well as for the grading process.

The Ba 1 course High Enlightenment II is a course mainly devoted to the work and impact of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. The Ba 3 course History of Political Thought is a course previously given by several lecturers on a variety of figures and ideas in ancient and (early-)modern political philosophy but may be newly developed by the lecturer in consultation with the other colleagues in the history of philosophy.

ESPhil plans to restructure its Ba programs towards a more thematically inspired course design beyond 2023.

You will also be asked to act as an advisor on several BA and MA theses.
