Associate professor in Modern European History in a Global Context at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department History, Maastricht University 1.0 fte 2-year tenure track UHD and directly there after a 4 year track HL

FASoS is seeking an associate professor with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research in modern (19th and/or 20th century) European history from a global and/or transnational perspective.

Research is carried out within the context of the Research Institute for Arts and Social Sciences and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programmes Politics and Culture of Europe and/or Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. You will be expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding that is related to the faculty’s core research themes and in dialogue with an interdisciplinary research approach.

You will contribute to the teaching and coordination of courses and supervision of internships, projects and theses in the BA and MA programmes of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (among others, BA European Studies, MA Globalisation and Development Studies, Research MA European Studies). Ability to contribute to interfaculty teaching programmes a plus.

The division of teaching and research duties follows the regular division used at the Faculty of 60% teaching and management and 40% research. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.

Requirements
You display outstanding quality in research and styles of leadership, a strong sense of research identity, recognition in the field, you have a relevant international network and have experience with an interdisciplinary approach. Important markers of this quality in research and leadership include publications of original work in highly regarded journals within the field of the history of Europe-and-the-world; monographs and edited volumes published with prestigious (academic) presses; acquisition of funding from national, European and other research funding agencies; track-record in supervision of PhD students.

Your research shows how developments in Europe are understood from a broader global and/or transnational perspective and vice versa. Specific attention to interactions between Europe and regions in the Global South such as Africa, Latin America, or Asia a plus. Thematic focus is open: any number of themes (colonialism, development, migration, environment, labour, science, technology, medicine, business, diplomacy, etc.) merit a simultaneously European and global/transnational approach. We welcome applications from candidates who have worked in any of these, or other, thematic fields.

Fluency in English is a prerequisite, while non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch (basic level).

You should be an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and have demonstrated ability in thesis supervision and teaching coordination roles. Experience with course development is an asset. You are able to stimulate student learning and to maximize student participation in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL). Experience with teaching in international classrooms is preferable.

You should be ready to fulfil an important administrative role in the faculty, therefore having managerial and leadership qualities is deemed crucial. You are expected to be a genuine coach and leader, as well as a team player. You should be flexible and have broad academic interests and an open, effective management style.

In view of recruitment policies and the composition of our corps of associate professors at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Maastricht University in general, female candidates with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment.

Conditions of employment

The workload will be the normal workload for the position of an associate professor. Currently this implies 60% teaching – and 40% research activities.

The successful candidate will be appointed as an associate professor for 2 years. During this period, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your teaching and research talents, managerial qualities and a constructive approach. Subsequently there will be a possibility to apply for tenure (appointment for an indefinite period of time) in the position of associate professor. Under the condition of a positive assessment the position will be extended in a tenure contract.

Thereafter you will be on a 4-year track for a full professorship. You will have further opportunities to demonstrate your talents, entrepreneurial approach, constructive attitude, and managerial qualities and performance. On the condition of meeting the relevant criteria, an excellent performance / assessment and a positive decision of the faculty’s Executive Board, the dean will request the UM Executive Board permission to start the procedure for a full professorship.

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of € 4.406 — and a maximum of € 6.133 — gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 12-13, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).

Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

The university’s relocation policy stipulates that the selected candidate needs to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If not already living in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs or an allowance for alternative housing.

Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave as well as a shared office space and a PC.

Research is organised around four programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in the historic city centre of Maastricht.
