Postdoctoral Researcher EU Public Opinion Research

What are you going to do?
The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the EUDENTIFY research project directed by Prof. Theresa Kuhn. This 5-year project is funded by a VIDI grant of the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and seeks to analyse the relationship between European supranational institution building and European identity formation. The postdoctoral researcher will compile a longitudinal dataset from existing cross-national public opinion surveys and use dynamic Bayesian latent variable models to estimate a “mood” scale of European identity. The researcher will also publish (co-authored) research articles related to the project and will support the PI in project management and supervision activities. The researcher will be embedded in the vibrant and interdisciplinary research community at ARTES and will have the opportunity to become affiliated to the Programme group Challenges to Democratic Representation at the Department of Political Science at UvA.
Your tasks and responsibilities:
- Identifying and cleaning appropriate survey data sets
- Compiling a longitudinal, cross-national dataset with aggregate information on European identity by country and year from 1970 until 2020
- conducting research, presenting intermediate research results at workshops and conferences and publishing co-authored, peer reviewed articles;
- participating in meetings of the project research group and developing a shared database;
- co-organising knowledge dissemination activities;
- assisting with administrative responsibilities related to the project.
Requirements
Your experience and profile:
- a PhD in political science, sociology, European studies or closely related field in the social sciences and humanities;
- advanced quantitative research skills, including latent variables modelling (e.g., factor analysis, IRT models, etc.);
- experience with stan software and advanced programming skills in R;
- a good grasp of the literature on comparative public opinion and/or orientations towards European integration;
- a track record of publishing in high-ranking academic journals and/or with leading presses or a demonstrable capacity to develop such a record;
- a strong cooperative attitude and willingness to closely collaborate with the PI and members of a diverse team;
- ability to work independently;
- strong project management and organizational skills;
- excellent command of English.
Conditions of employment
The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between € 3.703 to € 5,439. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
