Your role

Are you organised, resourceful and diligent? We need someone to fulfil the important role of collecting and co-ordinating historical data about institutions for our UNICA research project and for the broader Institutions for Collective Action research team.

Your main tasks

Your main task is collecting and co-ordinating data for the UNICA project, particularly by searching the archives of various types of institutions for collective action in north western Europe. You will also work with UNICA researchers to plan the collection and management of data, and act as the data manager of the research team. This means that you will ensure that protocols are followed, and metadata is correctly applied so data can be used by team members and external partners. You will inform, advise and support the team throughout the research data life cycle (collection, management, storage and publication) in accordance with international RDM standards. You will initiate and actively support data management workflows, ensuring the effective organisation of research data for example in the form of Data Management Planning (DMP) for research projects.

Other specific tasks include:

  • Supporting the Institutions for Collective Action research team with practical administrative tasks, and supporting team members with organising events and meetings, dealing with internal and external requests, and managing agendas and the team’s collective resources.
  • Visiting historical archives online and on location to collect data and for surveys and experiments.
  • Establishing a data management system for data collected by the research team.
  • Helping researchers with data analysis as required.

Working with team leader Prof. Tine De Moor and other team members to ensure the smooth running of the research team, performing practical administration tasks, organising and co-ordinating the team with a variety of tasks: writing short texts; copy-editing; creating webpages; managing bibliographic databases; dealing with the team’s internal and external correspondence and communications; and taking minutes.

Required qualifications

  • At least a bachelor degree in humanities or social sciences, preferably in history or archival sciences.
  • Willingness and ability to support the whole research team.
  • Willingness to learn new skills, e.g. new software, that can contribute to the functioning of the team.
  • Ability to take a co-ordinating role as well as assisting team members.

Your required competencies

  • Experience with research methodologies and the way research data are managed, and a broad understanding of how data and software underpin high-quality research.
  • Experience in archival work and data collection in general (e.g. through surveys), preferably also with experience in palaeography
  • Experience in working with relational database management software
  • Preferred experience with handling research data following protocols, documenting research data using standards, sharing data across institutional boundaries, and working according to Data Management Plans or protocols.
  • Affinity and empathy with academic research and education.
  • ICT skills and familiarity with ICT and internet-driven organisational and work processes.
  • A proactive problem-solver, results-oriented, analytical and highly sociable team player, with strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, able to interact with different offices and other stakeholders connected to RSM, ESE, ERIM and EUR.
  • Fast, efficient and punctual in following-up tasks to support the research team’s activities and project-related issues.
  • Inquisitive, in particular to solve very diverse practical problems that may pop up during a research project.
  • Good planning capacities: capable of foreseeing future needs of the team and coming up with potential solutions.
  • Well-organised and structured approach to executing repetitive tasks.
  • Willingness to learn new skills in domains of software use (Indesign, website management, database management systems) and team management skills.
  • Capable of working independently and to plan tasks according to the needs of the team.
  • Fluent in written and spoken Dutch and English, level CEFR C1 for both or native speaker.

You will be able to organise your own work, in collaboration with other team members. Working from home will be possible. If archival works demands this, you might need to travel to other countries in Europe and beyond. In general, evening and weekend work is not required, but in rare cases urgent deadlines may require this.

The conditions of employment correspond with the collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

Salary is subject to training and experience and may vary from a minimum of € 2,920 (scale 9 CAO NU) gross per month and up to a maximum of € 4,012 gross per month (scale 9 CAO NU), based on a full-time contract of 38 hours. Erasmus University has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8 per cent, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3 per cent, and 41 vacation days.
