Strathclyde Research Studentship Scheme – “Beyond Shell-Shock: New perspectives on psychological and/or emotional responses to the First World War.”

‘Shell-shock’ has tended to dominate the historiography of the psychological and emotional responses to the First World War. Historians have shown that the category was contested, often related to the ‘industrial’ nature of the warfare, and had lasting impacts on British society. Much of this research has focused on male combatants and female nurses. Research on women who experienced active service in other contexts (the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), the Women’s Royal Naval Service and the Women’s Royal Air Force) and men who did not fight overseas remains under-developed.

This project promises to go beyond the limitations of the existing literature, namely its restricted focus on nurses and its narrow concern with those classified as suffering from ‘shell-shock’, to provide fresh perspectives on the ways in which people experienced and responded to conflict. The project is in part an examination of the impacts of experiencing warfare on society, in part a study of the response of the medical profession to combat trauma in this period, and in part an effort to recover lost histories of trauma and suffering.
