Student assistant CREATE – historical 3D city models
The Amsterdam Centre for Cultural Heritage and Identity and the Department of Media Studies of the Faculty of Humanities are looking for a student assistant in the area of archaeology, history, cartography or urban history as part of Creative Amsterdam: An E-Humanities Perspective (CREATE), supervised by prof. Julia Noordegraaf.
CREATE is a research program that uses large-scale digital data and techniques to investigate how cultural industries have shaped Amsterdam’s unique position as a Creative City in a European and global context, from the 17th century until the present day.
Project description
You will contribute to the modelling and construction of a diachronic 3D model of the historical development of Amsterdam to be used for the Amsterdam Time Machine, one of CREATE’s research themes.
The Amsterdam Time Machine (ATM) is a hub for linked historical data on Amsterdam. The web of information on people, places, relationships, events, and objects will unfold in time and space through geographical and 3D representations. In this Google Earth of the past, users can go back and forth between the city as a whole, neighborhoods, streets, houses, and even zoom in on the pictures that adorned the walls of for instance merchants and regents. The systematic linkage of datasets from heterogeneous sources allows users to ask new questions on, for instance, cultural events, everyday life, social relations, or the use of public space in the city of Amsterdam.
The project will be supervised by CREATE senior programmer Ivan Kisjes and prof.dr. Julia Noordegraaf, in collaboration with the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam.
Requirements
If you are the Student assistant we are looking for, you have:
- a BA degree completed before 31 August 2018;
- a strong background or demonstrable interest in 3D modelling with historical data;
- research experience, or a track record of project based work, and the ability to function in a multidisciplinary team.
