Temporary Lecturer History of International Relations (0.7 FTE)

The section History of International Relations (HIR), part of the Department of History and Art History, seeks to appoint a temporary Lecturer, specialised in international history with a focus on any of the following themes: global governance, (post)colonialism, and European history in a global perspective. Candidates working at the cross-section of these themes are particularly encouraged to apply.

This is a teaching position with limited possibilities to apply for research funding. The successful candidate is expected to particularly contribute to the Bachelor’s track and the Master’s programme ‘International Relations in a Historical Perspective’, including curriculum design and course coordination. Teaching will be primarily in Dutch.

REQUIREMENTS
We are interested in candidates with a keen interest in teaching. Applicants should show how their expertise will contribute to teaching in the clusters on Global and Imperial Relations and/or Europe in the World in particular. Ideally, candidates have a demonstrated interdisciplinary interest in both history and international relations and experience in multi-archival research. Candidates should be able to teach in both Dutch and English from February 2022 onwards.

As the successful candidate you will have:

  • a PhD degree or far advanced PhD trajectory in history;
  • sufficient experience teaching undergraduate students;
  • a willingness to teach beyond your own expertise;
  • a commitment to take up coordinating and administrative tasks regarding teaching;
  • proficiency in both Dutch and English;
  • the ambition to contribute to the academic life of the section and the department.

Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers. The successful candidate is required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one. Candidates must fulfil the conditions set by the IND to work in the Netherlands. Please visit this link for more information on these terms and conditions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
We offer a temporary position (0.7 FTE) for a period of three to four years. The preferred starting date is 15 January 2022 or 1 February 2022 at the latest; the teaching block starts on 7 February. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience  – ranges between €3,807 and €5,211 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model). EMPLOYER
A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major societal themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Sustainability.

The Faculty of Humanities has around 6,000 students and 900 staff members. It comprises four knowledge domains: Philosophy and Religious Studies, History and Art History, Media and Culture Studies, and Languages, Literature and Communication. With its research and education in these fields, the faculty aims to contribute to a better understanding of the Netherlands and Europe in a rapidly changing social and cultural context. The enthusiastic and committed colleagues and the excellent amenities in the historical city center of Utrecht, where the faculty is housed, contribute to an inspiring working environment.

The section HIR studies the history of international relations and transnational configurations of power and politics from an empirically grounded perspective, and with a keen interest in theoretical innovation. The section is organized in three thematic clusters, i.e. ‘Global and Imperial Relations’, ‘Europe in the World’ and ‘Conflict and Security’. Increasingly, we work and teach at the cross-sections of these fields, on issues such as decolonization, militarization, peace and diplomacy, but also environmental governance, war and technology. In both our teaching and our research we share an attentiveness to how power and influence are (re)institutionalized and contested globally, but also how these dynamics play out differently across geographical instantiations and transmute over time. HIR connects the past with present-day issues. We value team science, research-informed teaching and we jointly run a series of ambitious educational programmes. We aim to be both outspoken and nuanced in our public engagement activities.
