Three Temporary Lecturers in European Studies, University of Amsterdam

The Faculty of Humanities has a vacancy for 3 Temporary Lecturers  in European Studies. You will be expected to keep up with your subject and to incorporate new developments into your teaching. There is no requirement of academic research with these posts, but ambitions in that area are highly appreciated, and will be encouraged where possible. 

Tasks

  • The development, coordination and provision of teaching, in the BA programmes (and where appropriate in the MA), in specific areas of European Studies and also in more general modules such as European Integration and the Philosophy of Humanities.;
  • supervising BA and (where appropriate) MA dissertations;
  • keeping up with the literature in your discipline, and integrating new developments into your teaching;
  • an active contribution to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes, regarding didactics and the contents of the programmes, and their evaluation;
  • supervising and tutoring students;
  • taking part in committees and working groups, and carrying out administrative tasks as directed.

Requirements

European Studies is seeking candidates for the following posts:     

1. Literary and Cultural History of Modern Europe 0,4 – 0,6 fte, 2 years

A fixed-term, two-year appointment to carry out teaching duties in Modern European Literature in the core undergraduate European Studies programme for the academic years 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Candidates must have a background in European literary and cultural history, and be able to teach tutorial groups on the following core courses: National Thought in Europe, European Literary History, Facets of European Identity, and Philosophy of the Humanities.

Some teaching experience is essential; a PhD in a relevant research field would be an advantage.

2. East European Studies, 0,4 – 0,6 fte, 2 years

A fixed-term, two-year appointment in East European Studies, with a background in European Studies, (East) European history politics, international relations or culture, to carry out teaching duties in East European Studies in the core undergraduate European Studies programme for the academic years 2016-17 and 2017-18.

The ideal candidate will have a sound knowledge of 20th century Russian and East European history and is able to teach tutorial groups on the following courses: The Other Europe, Russian and Soviet History, and Central and Eastern Europe.

Some teaching experience is essential; a PhD in a relevant research field would be an advantage.

3. Economics and History, 0,4 – 0,6 fte, 2 years

A fixed-term, two-year appointment to carry out teaching duties in European economics in its Bachelor programme for the academic years 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Candidates must have a degree in European Studies, Economics, History or Politics and should preferably hold or be demonstrably working towards a doctorate in a subject related to the European economy. Expertise is required to teach Economics courses such as the Economic integration of Europe, European Economics (micro and macro), EU economic policy or political economy, as well as more general European Studies courses in e.g. European integration, Research methods or Philosophy of Humanities.

Some teaching experience is essential; a PhD in a relevant research field would be an advantage.

Credentials required for all posts:

  • good command of both English and Dutch; able to teach in both languages;
  • experience of different forms and levels of delivering university teaching;
  • the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO), or willingness to acquire this within a relatively short time-frame;
  • experience of digital and audiovisual teaching facilities; affinity with ICT in university teaching;
  • a good team worker and versatile at all levels, capable of multidisciplinary co-operation;
  • good organizational experience and skills.
