UAntwerpen – Doctoraatsbursaal “Overvloed en onbehagen. Ongelijkheid in de Nederlandse materiële cultuur. Amsterdam, 1581-1780”

Voor het FWO-project “Overvloed en onbehagen. Ongelijkheid in de Nederlandse materiële cultuur. Amsterdam, 1581-1780“ zoekt het Centrum voor Stadsgeschiedenis van de Universiteit Antwerpen een doctoraatsbursaal voor vier jaar.

Waarover gaat het

Historisch onderzoek naar sociale ongelijkheid staat vandaag hoog op de agenda, en de inzichten in de lange-termijnveranderingen in inkomens- en vermogensongelijkheid zijn dan ook sterk toegenomen tijdens de voorbije jaren. Terwijl we al veel weten over de evolutie van inkomens- en vermogensongelijkheid, tasten we in het onderzoek naar de consumptie-ongelijkheid nog grotendeels in het duister. De centrale ambitie van dit project is om een essentiële bijdrage te leveren aan deze literatuur door de materiële ongelijkheid te bestuderen in Amsterdam tijdens de zogenaamde “Gouden Eeuw”. Hierdoor zal dit project leiden tot een beter begrip van een cruciale transitieperiode in de geschiedenis van de Europese materiële cultuur. Recent historisch onderzoek heeft de Republiek in de zeventiende eeuw immers aangewezen als geboorteplaats van een nieuwe, meer ‘moderne’ consumptiecultuur. Dankzij de opkomst en invloed van een groeiende stedelijke middenklasse, veranderde de aard van consumptie fundamenteel in deze periode. Luxeconsumptie zou zich immers geëmancipeerd hebben van de traditionele ‘oude luxe’, gericht op de bevestiging van sociale standsverschillen. In plaats van het reproduceren van sociale ongelijkheid, wordt de ‘nieuwe luxe’ die in deze periode ontstond geassocieerd met nieuwe middengroepen die voornamelijk streefden naar gerieflijkheid, huiselijkheid, en respectabiliteit (De Vries 2008). Dit project is de eerste grootschalige poging om deze hypothese empirisch te testen door het model over de Nederlandse stedelijke consumptiecultuur te verbinden met debatten over sociale en economische ongelijkheid in de vroegmoderne periode. Het is ook het eerste project dat de materiële cultuur in de belangrijkste stad van Nederland over twee eeuwen in kaart zal brengen.

Wat is het bredere kader?

Voor dit onderzoek bundelden verschillende historici hun krachten. De onthaalinstelling is de Universiteit Antwerpen (Bruno Blondé), die samenwerkt met de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Wouter Ryckbosch), de Universiteit Utrecht (Maarten Prak) en het Massachusetts Institute for Technology (Anne McCants).

Functie

• Je bereidt in samenwerking met de Vrije Universiteit Brussel een (dubbel)doctoraat voor rond de geschiedenis van de materiële cultuur en sociale ongelijkheid in het vroegmoderne Amsterdam.
• Je neemt deel aan de Phd-opleiding van het N.W.Posthumus-instituut
• Je publiceert tussentijdse resultaten als wetenschappelijk artikel of hoofdstuk in een boek, al dan niet in samenwerking met andere onderzoekers
• Je neemt actief deel aan activiteiten van Aipril, HOST (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), het Centrum voor Stadsgeschiedenis en het Urban Studies Institute van de UA

Profiel

• Je hebt een masterdiploma geschiedenis
• Studenten in het laatste jaar van hun masteropleiding kunnen eveneens solliciteren
• Je hebt belangstelling voor kwantitatief geïnspireerd onderzoek, maar ook het kwalitatieve onderzoek schrikt je niet af
• Je bent een creatief onderzoeker die in staat is autonoom onderzoeksvragen te ontwikkelen binnen het bredere thema van dit onderzoeksproject
• Ervaring in het domein van de sociaal-economische geschiedenis van de Middeleeuwen, Vroegmoderne tijd en/of Nieuwste Tijd strekt tot aanbeveling
• Je kan je vloeiend uitdrukken in academisch Engels en Nederlands
• Je kijkt er naar uit met originele bronnen te werken en je paleografische skills te verbeteren
• Je kan zeer goede tot uitstekende studieresultaten voorleggen
• Je gaat kwaliteitsgericht, integer, creatief en samenwerkingsgericht te werk.

 Aanbod

• Een voltijdse doctoraatsbeurs gedurende vier jaar
• Beursbedrag berekend volgens de beursbedragen voor doctoraatsbeurzen als Bijzonder Academisch Personeel
• Je bent hoofdzakelijk te werk gesteld op de Stadscampus van de UAntwerpen, een dynamische en uitdagende werkomgeving
• Je brengt minstens een half jaar door aan de Vrije Universiteit van Brussel
• Het onderzoek voorziet ook onderzoeksverblijven in Amsterdam en aan de Universiteit Utrecht

We are looking for a PhD-researcher for 4 years. Your research is part of the FWO-project “The embarrassment of riches? Inequality and the Dutch material culture. Amsterdam, 1581-1780”

The project 

At present, the historical study of social inequality ranks high on the research agenda, and in the past years our knowledge of changing income and wealth inequality has progressed significantly. The major ambition of this project is to contribute to a more balanced multidimensional view on social inequality by studying the material inequality in “Golden Age” Amsterdam. In so doing we will contribute to a deeper understanding of one of the critical transition periods in the history of European material culture. Recent historiography has credited the Dutch society of the seventeenth century for its pivotal role in the genesis of a new, allegedly more modern consumer culture. Thanks to the influence of the urban middling layers of society, the argument goes, the very nature of consumption changed in this era & area. When it comes to ‘material culture’ in the Netherlands luxury consumption is thought to have emancipated from conspicuous consumption, a luxury model which traditionally was associated with highly unequal societies. Rather than reproducing social inequalities, which ‘old luxury’ consumer patterns did, the ‘new luxuries’ targeted the middling sort of people and served multiple goals such as comfort, pleasure, respectability. This project is the first major attempt to empirically verify this hypothesis on Dutch urban consumerism by explicitly linking it to debates on social and economic inequality.

The research network

The project is firmly grounded in interuniversity cooperation. While the University of Antwerp, the Centre for Urban History is the main host Institution (Bruno Blondé), the collaboration includes the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Wouter Ryckbosch), Utrecht University (Maarten Prak), as well as MIT – Massachusetts Institute for Technology (Anne McCants).

Job description

• You prepare a joint doctoral thesis (with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel) on the history of material culture and consumption inequality in early modern Amsterdam 
• You enroll in the PhD Training Program of the N.W.Posthumus-Institute
• You will publish scientific articles/book chapters related to the research project. These publications can be co-authored with other researchers.
• You participate in the activities of Aipril (The Antwerp Interdisciplinary Platform for Research into Inequality), HOST (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), the Centre for Urban History & the Urban Studies Institute of the University of Antwerp.

Profile and requirements

• You hold a master degree in history 
• Students in the final year of their degree are encouraged to apply as well

• Experience in the field of economic and/or social history of the medieval, early modern or modern period is recommended.
