Cultural History at Utrecht University is structured along three research domains: Transcultural Connections in Europe and the World, Uses of the Past, and Knowledge Practices. These groups take an interest in the Digital Humanities (text mining and network analysis), in the theory of (teaching) history and in such themes as postcolonialism, race, gender, the body, heritage, citizenship, public history, popular culture, (inter)nationalism, and the history of science & humanities.

- a PhD degree in History or a related subject appropriate to carrying out cultural historical research and teaching;
- experience in graduate and (research—led) post-graduate teaching, including setting up new courses and programmes that fit the curricular context;
- a record (appropriate to career stage) of publications that demonstrate the ability to conduct research that is internationally acknowledged in terms of significance, originality and rigour;
- a realistic medium-term research plan, addressing substantial historical problems and aimed at (co-)creating research projects;
- a philosophy of teaching, presented in the letter of motivation;
- the ambition to broadcast scholarly knowledge via a variety of outlets, directed to scholars as well as wider audiences, such as well-respected Open Access journals, podcasts, community engagement platforms, or alternative media;
- a supportive attitude towards colleagues, with an open mind towards creative forms of exchange and cooperation, fostering diversity, and contributing to the academic life of the department.
Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) if they are not already in possession of one.
Candidates are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English; non-Dutch candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.
Conditions of employment
We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for one year in an international working environment. In case of a good performance, employment will be made permanent. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience – ranges between €3,746 and €5,826 (scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. We offer a position, as from 1 November 2021 at the latest.
Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
