University Lecturer in early modern/modern history (1650-1914)

The Leiden University Institute for History invites applications for a University Lecturer in early modern/modern history (1650-1914) (1,0 fte)
Starting date 1 August 2023

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Institute for History seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of a university lecturer with teaching and research expertise in the field of early modern and modern history 1650-1914) with a focus on Europe, but excluding Dutch history. In particular, we welcome applicants whose research extends to several European countries.

Key responsibilities:

  • Teach and supervise students in the BA and MA programmes in History dealing with early modern and modern history;
  • Teach for Leiden University College The Hague; the BA International Studies;
  • Carry out research, resulting in publications relevant for the Leiden research specialization ‘Collective identities and transnational networks in medieval and early modern Europe, 1000-1800’ and/or to the research specialization ‘Politics, Culture and National Identities, 1789 to the Present’;
  • Use research experience to co-supervise doctoral research;
  • Communicate research results beyond academia;
  • Develop research projects; write national and international grant proposals;
  • Undertake administrative tasks, and play a role in the various teaching and examination committees;
  • Be present in Leiden throughout the academic year.

REQUIREMENTS

Selection criteria:

  • You are ahistorian with a PhD and a good range of publications dealing with European but not with Dutch history (preference may be given to applicants whose research extends to several European countries);
  • You have a publication record commensurate with your career stage;
  • You are an experienced and inspiring academic teacher, with clear ideas on teaching methods, willing and able to teach outline papers across the early modern and modern period;
  • You have experience in obtaining research funding commensurate with career stage;
  • You are a scholar with an international academic network and collaborations.
  • You have affinity with and capacity for teamwork and collegiality in an intercultural work environment;
  • You are willing to actively contribute to the setting of the Leiden History Institute;
  • You have an excellent command of English as well as some other European languages. If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking they are expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years, so as to be able to teach in the BA programme. The Institute for History will make resources available to this end. The administrative language of Leiden University is Dutch;

Terms and conditions
The appointment (1,0 fte) is in temporary employment for 18 months (1 August, 2023 to January 31st, 2025), with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation. The position corresponds to the position of University Lecturer in the University system of job profiles (UFO). The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 3557 (scale 10-4) to € 6181 (scale 12) for a full working week. Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.

Depending on qualifications, as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly regarding teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience, the appointee may either start at the appropriate step in scale 10, 11 or 12.
