University Lecturer in Latin American Foreign Relations and Regional Affairs
The Faculty of Humanities, Institute for History is looking for a University Lecturer in Latin American Foreign Relations and Regional Affairs (1.0 fte).
Key responsibilities
- Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels of the BA programme in International Studies, the MA International Relations, and the BA, MA and ResMa programmes in Latin American Studies; supervision of BA and MA theses; contributions to curriculum development. Teaching duties may include courses on Latin American foreign relations, Latin American politics from a regional dimension, and developmental issues (such as regional security, drugs trafficking, infrastructural integration, and Latin American relations vis-à-vis Europe, The United States and Asia), among other topics;
- Original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate academic channels;
- Administrative duties at the teaching programmes involved (Latin American Studies programme, International Studies, master in International Relations);
- Research funding acquisition (NWO, ERC grants, etc.);
- Representation of the field to external audiences and in public media.
Selection criteria
- Specialist knowledge of contemporary Latin American international relations, politics and society, with a special focus on the period 1980 up to the present;
- Excellent knowledge of present-day theories and academic interpretation of international relations and global affairs state-civil society relations in Latin America. The ability to work from interdisciplinary perspective (including history, culture and social sciences) is a must;
- A PhD degree in Latin American studies focused on relevant contemporary issues;
- A research and publication record that is commensurate with career stage. Research experience in Latin America;
- Demonstrable experience and expertise in teaching courses on Latin American relations and issues of regional relevance is an asset;
- A very good academic teaching record (evidenced by evaluations); commitment to high-quality teaching practice, and wide thematic teaching scope;
- Demonstrable experience in administrative duties at academic committees within university structures is recommendable;
- An excellent command of English and Spanish; The BA and MA programmes in International Studies and International Relations are taught in English, while some courses in the Latin American programme are taught in Spanish.
- Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, she/he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
Our Faculty/Institute
Since its founding in 1575, Leiden University has acquired an international reputation for excellent teaching and research. The Faculty of Humanities is an international centre for the study of languages, cultures, arts, and societies worldwide, in their historical contexts, from prehistory to the present. We take culture broadly to include religions, philosophies and worldviews as well as literature, art and technology. In research and teaching, we focus on Dynamics of Diversity, meaning the mobility of people, language, culture, ideas, art and institutions in a globalizing world, and their interconnectivity through the ages. The Faculty is home to well over 5000 students and 900 staff. It offers some 30 BA programmes and 45 MA programmes.
The lecturer will hold a position in the Institute for History. In this institute he/she will join the section of Latin American Studies. In the various BA and MA programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities the current reality of Latin America is taught from three disciplinary perspectives: contemporary history, literature and linguistics. He/she will also teach in the BA programme International Studies and/or the MA International Relations.
Terms and conditions
Starting date 1 August 2018. Initially, appointment will be for a period of two years. Tenure is contingent on the performance of the candidate, as well as on the general situation (numbers of students, finances) of the Leiden History Department.
The monthly salary will range between €3,475 and €5,405 gross, based on a full-time appointment (pay scale 11/12 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities), commensurate with qualifications. Depending on qualifications, the lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until she/he fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. If the successful applicant does not speak Dutch, we expect him/her to become proficient in the language within two years; teaching will be funded by the Institute.
