The Institute for History seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an university lecturer with teaching and research expertise in the field of Modern Latin American History. As a lecturer you will teach courses as needed in the history section of the Latin American Studies programme, and you will participate in the research programme ‘Politics, Culture and National Identities 1789-present’ of the Institute for History.

You are expected to have research expertise on public policies in Latin America directed to alleviate poverty and inequality issues and to have concrete plans for further research in that area of expertise.

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in the BA, MA and ResMa programmes in Latin American Studies, supervision of BA and MA theses; contributions to curriculum development. Teaching duties may include courses on Latin American developmental issues and public policies (such as regional integration schemes, public policies on gender inequalities and social exclusion), among other topics;
  • Carrying out research, resulting in the publication of relevant articles and books in the field of developmental studies;
  • Administrative duties on academic committees commensurate with career stage, both within the Latin American Studies programme and at the faculty level;
  • Initiating new research projects and applying for research funding from external bodies;
  • Representation of the field to external audiences and in public media.

Requirements

Selection criteria

  • You hold a PhD degree in Latin American studies focused on relevant contemporary developmental issues.
  • You have demonstrable experience and expertise in teaching general courses on modern Latin American history and society, concerning issues of social and economic development is regarded an asset.
  • You have a very good academic teaching record (evidenced by evaluations), commitment to high-quality teaching practice, and wide thematic teaching scope.
  • You have a research and publication record that is commensurate with career stage.
  • You have research experience in Latin America.
  • You have specialist knowledge of contemporary Latin American history, politics and society, with a special focus on the social and economic development of the region since the 1980s to the present;
  • You have excellent knowledge of present-day theories and academic interpretations in the area of Latin American public policies and social and political development from both national and regional perspectives.
  • You have the ability to work from an interdisciplinary perspective (including history, culture and social sciences);
  • You have affinity with and capacity for teamwork and collegiality in an intercultural work environment;

Terms and conditions
The appointment (0,8 fte) is in temporary employment for 18 months (1 August, 2023 to January 31st, 2025), with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation. The position corresponds to the position of University Lecturer in the University system of job profiles (UFO). The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 3557 (scale 10-4) to € 6181 (scale 12) for a full working week.

Depending on qualifications, as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly regarding teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience, the appointee may either start at the appropriate step in scale 10, 11 or 12.
