University Lecturer in Social History

Leiden University, the Faculty of Humanities, Institute of History, has an opening per 1 August 2020 for an University Lecturer in Social History

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Doing research in the field of Social History, with an emphasis on the period after 1900; publish outcomes of research and present results at (international) conferences;
  • Teaching courses for students at the Bachelor and Master level in Economic and Social History, with an emphasis on Social History;
  • Supervising students in writing their thesis at the Bachelor and Master level;
  • Organising teaching;
  • Acquisition of project funding at the national, European and international level;
  • Participating in the research programme of the History Institute;
  • Participation in administration;
  • Communicating research results to people outside academia.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A PhD-degree in Social History;
  • Demonstrable expertise in the field of Social History, with an emphasis on the post-1900 period;
  • A connection to research that is done within our section Economic and Social History;
  • A publication record that is commensurate with career stage;
  • Proven ability to work with a large variety of primary sources;
  • Demonstrable teaching skills (demonstrated by teaching evaluations, BKO-registration, etc.) and experience with innovative educational methods;
  • Proven skills in administration (within and outside the university);
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is considered an advantage. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Dutch, s/he will be expected to learn Dutch within a period of two years (teaching is in Dutch at the Bachelor level);
  • Ability to teach in English.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The appointment is for 0.8 FTE, in temporary employment for two years, with the option for an extension to a permanent contract. The rank of lecturer corresponds roughly to that of assistant professor in North-American terms. salary ranges from € 3.637 to € 5.656 for a full working week (pay scale 11/12 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

Depending on qualifications, the appointee may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until he/she fully meets the requirements for scales 11/12 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. We encourage all staff to learn Dutch and offer access to language classes.

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
