University Lecturer (UD) in Greek Papyrology – Leiden University

Job description

The Leiden Papyrological Institute is a prominent institute for research and teaching on ancient Greek and Demotic Egyptian papyri. Members of the Institute are active in publishing and interpreting ancient texts from various collections around the world, including the collection of papyri that is hosted by the Institute itself. LUCAS seeks to appoint a University Lecturer (UD) to offer teaching on Greek papyri, to engage in innovative research on Greek papyri, and to be one member of the two-headed staff of the Papyrological Institute, as well as curator of the Greek papyri located at Leiden University Library. We welcome applications of specialists in either documentary papyri or literary papyri. We particularly welcome applications of candidates who have some expertise in ancient Coptic as well. The University Lecturer should show affinity with Digital Humanities and with current developments in Cultural Heritage Studies (including debates on the provenance of papyri). The University Lecturer will teach courses on Greek papyri (read in Greek and in translation) for students of Classics and Ancient Civilizations, History, Egyptology, and Law (BA, MA), courses on Greek language and literature for students of Classics (BA), and, if applicable, a course on Coptic for Egyptologists (BA). The University Lecturer will be asked to contribute to the cooperation of Leiden papyrologists (Arabic, Aramaic, Coptic, Demotic, Greek), and to participate actively in networks of specialists working on the material text collections based at Leiden (cuneiform tablets, papyri, manuscripts, early prints) and in The Netherlands. The university lecturer should have a strong track record in securing external funding for innovative research projects.

Key responsibilities

Developing, teaching and coordinating courses on Greek papyri at different levels (e.g., in the BA programmes Griekse en Latijnse Taal en Cultuur, Geschiedenis, and Oude Nabije Oosten Studies, the MA Classics and Ancient Civilizations, and related programmes). Language of instruction are Dutch (BA) and English (MA)
Supervising BA and (Res)MA theses in Dutch and English
Supervising internships, both in Dutch and in English
Playing an active role in recruiting students by contributing to open days, orientation and information sessions
Participating in the development and implementation of educational innovations, also in digital form
Conducting research based on an individual research plan within one of the research programmes o

Requirements

Your profile

You have a PhD degree in Classics, with a specialisation in Greek papyrology.
You have been trained in curating and handling ancient papyri.
We especially welcome applications of candidates who also have expertise in ancient Coptic.
You have a strong academic teaching record, both on BA and (research) MA level, as demonstrated by teaching evaluations and a BKO/UTQ registration (or willingness to obtain the nationally standardised University Teaching Qualification within two years).
You are a committed and inspiring teacher, with an inclusive approach to education and the ability to engage a diverse community of BA and (research) MA students.
You are aware of current issues, viewpoints and innovative methods within the field, including issues relating to Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage.
You have a vision on papyrology as an inclusive and innovative discipline, which connects scholars working on Greek, Arabic, Aramaic, Demotic and Coptic papyri and other text collections within Leiden and beyond.

You have a proven track record of excellent research, as demonstrated by a list of peer-reviewed publications and awards/grants commensurate with career stage.

Conditions of employment

We offer
We offer a 0.8 FTE position initially for 1.5 years, with the possibility of an extension to a permanent position, based on funding, need and performance. The appointment will consist of 75% teaching/admin, and 25% research. In the first two years, extra support will be available to strengthen the position of the Leiden Papyrological Institute. The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 2,960,- (scale 10) to € 5,439,- (scale 11) for a full working week. Depending on qualifications, the appointee may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until they fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience.
