University Lecturer (UD) in Migration History
The researcher will work within the research programme Social Citizenship and Migration, which is a sub-programme of the so-called profile area ‘Citizenship, Migration and Global Transformations’. This is a multi-disciplinary programme run jointly by four Faculties: Governance, Law, Social Sciences and Humanities (History).
The main task of the UD will be doing research in the field of migration history, within the profile area and with the partners in the collaboration. In the period 2019-2023, Leiden University invests 2.1 million euros in this research programme Social Citizenship and Migration. Many European countries face a wide variety of challenges resulting from old and new migrations, which raise questions regarding perceived threats and opportunities transpiring from ethnic diversity, integration and social participation, racism, and the need for (re-)defining national identity, belonging, civic responsibilities and the sustainability of national social welfare regimes. These challenges test the limits of solidarities. The overall aim of this programme is to analyze how developments in immigration and social citizenship provide and provided challenges and opportunities for the governance of societies and to inform theory and practice. The key responsibilities of the UD contain:
- Doing research on migration to, from and within Europe since 1945 with an emphasis on governance, reflecting on methods to evaluate the effects of past policies and policy changes, assessing effects of lobbying, analyzing societal and discursive change, explaining causes and consequences of societal change within the context of migration;
- Publishing articles in (international peer-reviewed) academic journals and present papers at (international) conferences;
- Preparing grant applications at the national, European and international level with the other partners in the collaboration;
- Coordinating tasks within the research programme Social Citizenship and Migration;
- Actively disseminating the research findings;
- Organising of and participating in seminars, workshops and conferences of the programme;
- Participating in the proposed Centre for Social Citizenship and Migration;
- Teaching at the Bachelor and Master level (about 2 courses per semester; 30% teaching 70% research) and supervising BA and MA theses.
Requirements
- A PhD-degree in migration history;
- Demonstrable expertise in the field of migration history;
- A publication record in line with career stage;
- The candidate should be excellent in English;
- Willingness and ability to work across disciplines and skills and ability to work constructively in a team;
- Proven ability to work with a large variety of primary sources;
- Knowledge of the Dutch language is considered an advantage. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Dutch, s/he will be expected to learn Dutch within a period of two years;
- Demonstrable teaching skills (demonstrated by teaching evaluations, BKO-registration, etc.).
Conditions of employment
The appointment is in temporary employment for four years, with no possibility for extension. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience, the gross monthly salary range from € 3,637.- to € 4,978.- (scale 11) for a full working week.
Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8,3%. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. We encourage all staff to learn Dutch and offer access to language classes.
