Job description

The University Lecturer will be working within the research programme Museums, Collections and Society (2019-2023) a collaboration between the Faculties of Humanities and Archaeology, under the supervision of prof. dr. Pieter ter Keurs. The research programme aims to stimulate collections-based research and will operate in close cooperation with museums in Leiden and The Hague. It partakes in (inter)national discussions on museum and collection-based issues, such as inclusion/exclusion, the consequences of classifying collections, representation in museum displays and restitution. The research programme will also include another university lecturer (at the Faculty of Archaeology) and several researchers. The successful candidate will:

  • Prepare and teach courses in the Museums and Collections MA programmes of the Faculty of Humanities (Art History) and the Faculty of Archaeology, in English;
  • Engage in all usual forms of instruction in the MA track Museums and Collections in our MA Arts and Culture including supervising in-company placements and excursions, supervising MA theses, both in Dutch and in English;
  • Play an active role in recruiting Dutch and international students by contributing to open days, orientation and information sessions;
  • Participate in the development and implementation of education innovations – also in digital form;
  • Conduct research based on an individual research plan within the framework of the research group Museums, Collections and Society and present the results in the form of publications, conference presentations and other means;
  • Stimulate and support members of the academic institute LUCAS and suitable external candidates in the acquisition of project funding at a national, European and international level (NWO, Horizon 2020);
  • Supervise, together with the head of the research group, PhD candidates;
  • Participate in the academic community of the Institute;
  • Contribute to administrative and management duties within Museums, Collections and Society.

Requirements

  • Graduated in an arts and humanities subject;
  • A PhD in the field of museum or collection research;
  • Awareness of current issues, viewpoints as well as innovative methods within the field;
  • Research profile that fits within the research theme of Museums, Collections and Society;
  • In possession of a network of contacts in museum studies and/or collection research;
  • Demonstrable and outstanding teaching skills (demonstrated by e.g. teaching evaluations, BKO/UTQ registration); experience in teaching at master’s level; experience with educational innovations;
  • Well-developed research skills, including the ability to formulate creative research questions, descriptive and analytical skills, a clear and persuasive style of writing, and an ability to collaborate with other researchers;
  • Proven track record of excellent independent research, as demonstrated by a substantial list of publications, awards/grants;
  • Proven awareness of and interest in (art)history, cultural studies and museum studies;
  • (Near) native proficiency in the languages of instruction, English and Dutch. If the candidate fulfils all other requirements, proficiency in Dutch may be acquired within one year after appointment;
  • Preferably first-hand experience in a museum context;
  • Flexible, excellent communication skills, team worker.

Conditions of employment

We offer a full time position for one year, with the possibility of extension with one more year, based on performance. Salary range from €3,637.- to €4,978.- per month for a fulltime appointment depending on prior education and working experience (pay scale 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Please note that, due to the temporary nature of the appointment, the candidate will not be able to carry out externally financed research projects (e.g. with NWO or ERC grants) which exceed the period of appointment.

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
