University Lectureship in modern Turkish history and culture

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate channels;
  • Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in the BA and MA programs in Middle-Eastern Studies, the BA in International Studies, the MA in International Relations and other programs and courses as appropriate; supervision of BA and MA theses;
  • Contributions to curriculum development. Teaching duties may include courses on modern Turkish  history and culture, Turkey in regional and global configurations, theories and methods in Middle-Eastern Studies, and history and culture of/in the Modem Middle East;
  • Administrative duties;
  • Representation of the field to external audiences and media.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Specialist knowledge of modern Turkish history and culture, including the ability to work with primary source material in Turkish (both modern Turkish and late Ottoman script); survey knowledge of the Middle East at large; affinity with Middle-Eastern Studies and with a vision of area studies as the nexus of disciplinary and regional expertise; the ability to work from interdisciplinary, transnational and transregional, and comparative perspectives;
  • A PhD degree in modern Turkish history. Candidates near completion of the degree will be considered;
  • A research and publication record that is commensurate with career stage. Research experience in Turkey or other locations relevant to the study of modern Turkish history and culture;
  • Commitment to high-quality teaching practice, and wide teaching scope in terms of content;
  • An excellent command of Modern Turkish;
  • An excellent command of English. The relevant MA prograrns and the BA program in International Studies are offered in English, and English may be used in the BA in Middle-Eastem Studies as well.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

We offer a position for 38 hours per week, fixed-term post from 1 August 2018 through 31 July 2020. Salary range, depending on education and work experience, from €3,475 to €5,405 (pay scale 11-12 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) gross per month, based on a full-time appointment.

DEPARTMENT

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. With its staff of 995, the faculty provides 27 master’s and 25 bachelor’s programmes for over 7,000 students based at locations in Leiden’s historic city centre and in modern buildings in The Hague.

The university lecturer will hold a position in the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies. LIAS is comprised of a School of Asian Studies and a School of Middle-Eastern Studies, with international staff and student populations. The institute is committed to a present-day vision of area studies, integrating disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives on a solid foundation of excellent language skills.
