Utrecht Universiteit – 2 Assistant professors Modern International History

The section History of International Relations (HIR) within the Department of History and Art History is looking for two Assistant Professors. At HIR we study the history of international relations and transnational configurations of power and politics from an empirically grounded perspective, and with a keen interest in conceptual innovation. The section is organized in three thematic hubs ‘Conflict and Security’, ‘Global and Imperial Relations’ and ‘Europe in the World’. HIR connects the past with present-day issues.

We are looking for applicants specialized in modern international history and/or the field of contemporary conflict studies with a focus on any of the following themes: the history of empire, colonialism and its discontents; the history of security; (the history of) natural resource management and environmental governance; the global political economy, and conflict, war and political violence. Candidates working at the cross-section of these themes and disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply.

We are interested in candidates who can help us expand our scope to the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the Global South. Ideally, candidates have a demonstrated interdisciplinary interest in history and social sciences, knowledge of at least 2 or more foreign languages, and extensive experience in international archives and/ or qualitative fieldwork.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • a PhD degree in History (preferably with a focus on the long 19th and 20th century); International Relations or Conflict Studies or a related discipline;
  • experience teaching undergraduate students at all levels and a commitment to thesis supervision and internships in our MA International Relations in Historical Perspective and MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights, as well as the RMA History;
  • ability to contribute to research-led postgraduate courses and to assist in the recruitment of postgraduate students;
  • a record (appropriate to career stage) of publications that demonstrate the ability to conduct research which is internationally excellent in significance, originality and rigor; for example as demonstrated with a monograph in review/forthcoming with a UP, and/or a high profile international peer reviewed journal article;
  • a statement of research, posing innovative and pressing questions related to the above HIR fields of expertise, and aiming for publications in leading journals, with potential for attracting external research funding;
  • readiness to engage with a wider audience and to assist in developing the impact of research beyond the university sector and/or a record of contributing to team science, engaging in international/transnational research projects on some of the topics mentioned above;
  • ability to play an appropriate role in departmental management and to contribute fully to the academic life of the department.

Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one.

Candidates are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English; non-Dutch candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for one year in an international working environment. In case of a good performance, extending the employment is one of the possibilities. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience  – ranges between €3,746 and €5,826 (scale 11/12 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment.

Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
