Utrecht University: temporary lecturer in Cultural History (0.7 FTE)

Hours per week: 28 tot 28
Faculty: Faculty of Humanities
Department: Department of History and Art History
Application deadline:

Job description

The Cultural History section within the Department of History and Art History at Utrecht University is one of the most interdisciplinary groups in the History department: we are trained as historians, but also as archaeologists, philologists, journalists and philosophers, even physicists. Together we study the ways in which people produce culture (through institutions, bodies and networks), circulate it (through education, books, newspapers, images and digital media), and reproduce it (through memory practices and heritage politics). Our group is clustered in three groups: Uses of the Past (studying the production of heritage and memory in contemporary and past societies), Knowledge Practices (exploring the cultural dimensions and networks defining knowledge production and expertise) and Transcultural Connections (analyzing and reflecting on the circulation of culture across the globe and societal impact of (post)colonialism). The group plays a central role in three Master programmes and the Bachelor education of the department. We also collaborate with other groups across Utrecht University (e.g. Descartes Centre and Graduate School of Teaching).

The Temporary Lecturers will mainly teach in the Bachelor program for history and will possibly also be involved in the Master Cultural History. They will teach and help coordinate courses in Cultural History, the Theory and Methodology of History, and General History – both in English and Dutch.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • teaching experience with undergraduate students and a commitment to thesis supervision and internships;
  • a clear teaching philosophy, briefly outlined in a teaching philosophy statement in which you reflect on your teaching beliefs and practices, and what skills and knowledge you bring to an education team. Include this statement in your letter of motivation;
  • a PhD degree or far advanced PhD trajectory in Cultural History or a related discipline;
  • the ambition and ability to contribute fully to the academic life of the group and the department.

Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one. Candidates are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English.

Candidates must fulfil the conditions set by the IND to work in the Netherlands. These are the terms and conditions.

Offer

The initial appointment, from 1 August 2022, will be on a temporary basis for a period of three to four years (0.7 FTE), depending on previous UU contracts. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience  – ranges between €3.821 and €5.230 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
