Job description

The Faculty of Humanities has a vacancy for a Professor of Contemporary History of Europe.

The Professor’s research is on the contemporary history of Europe. Possible focus areas include (but are not limited to): transnational histories of political thought and movements; histories of European integration; history of international relations; comparative political history; social and economic history of Europe.

The professor will lead the Modern European History chair group which at the moment comprises of ten colleagues, at teacher/docent, assistant professor and associate professor levels, with backgrounds in European history, European politics and European economics. The capacity group of European Studies is part of the Department of History, European Studies and Religious Studies (GER), and responsible for the BA and MA programmes in European Studies. The European Studies capacity group includes four chair groups: the Modern European History group that the professor will lead, European Governance, Modern European Literature, as well as East European Studies. The chair of the capacity group of European Studies rotates among the four professors/chair group leaders; equally rotating among GER staff are the GER Department chair, the research school ARTES, and the teaching directorship for European Studies.

The professor will support the HRM of the Modern European History group (career development, professionalization, coordination); together, the team is responsible for maintaining and updating specific parts of the ES programme, including BA core modules, the majors in European history and economy, as well the respective MA tracks. The professor’s teaching takes prominent positions in these clusters. We also expect cooperation with other programmes in the Department (e.g. History) and beyond, as well as a readiness to take on administrative responsibilities at Departmental or Faculty level.

The chair’s research should engage with some of the principal thematic areas of the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES), the relevant research school, as part of the wider Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research. The chair is also expected to take a leading role in the interdisciplinary and interfaculty Amsterdam Centre for European Studies. Moreover, the chair is expected to contribute to outreach and valorization, with the willingness to engage in societal and media debates on contemporary European issues.

Requirements

Candidates for the position are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • hold a PhD in European history or a related field;
  • have an excellent international academic reputation and publication record in European Studies, European history, or the history of international relations or movements;
  • are experienced and enthusiastic teachers at all levels of academic training;
  • have experience in developing teaching programmes at BA and MA levels;
  • can show a track record of acquiring external research funding;
  • have experience in the supervision of PhD projects and junior researchers;
  • have an extensive national and international network with academic, political and cultural institutions;
  • have experience with collaborative projects and is able to establish productive connections with other academic disciplines within as well as outside the department;
  • are able to contribute to knowledge exchange in public as well as academic settings;
  • have proven excellent management and leadership qualities, and is a capable and enthusiastic administrator.

All foreign employees appointed at the Faculty of Humanities are expected to have a good command of both written and spoken Dutch within two years.

Applications will be received by a selection committee headed by Prof. Thomas Vaessens. Following a procedure which may involve a formal leadership assessment and a public trial lecture, the committee will make its final recommendation to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

Important dates: the selection committee will review the applications on Tuesday 5 February 2019; on Thursday 7 February 2019 at the latest, candidates will be notified whether they are invited for a first round interview. First round interviews will be held on Tuesday 12 March 2019. Second round interviews and public trial lectures will be held on Thursday 11 April 2019.
