Vacancies: IISH – 2 PhD students & 1 Postdoc

The International Institute of Social History (IISH) conducts advanced research on global and economic history of work, workers, and labour relations and to this end gathers data, which are made available to other researchers as well.

Research program: Regional industrialization in Northwestern Europe and China, ca. 1800-present

2 PhD students

As of 1 December 2015, there will be an opening in the research department of the IISH for 2 PhD students (38 hours, 1fte) for a period of 4 years

Job description:

Within the ERC funded project on regional industrialization in Northwestern Europe and China, ca. 1800-present, there is an opening for two PhD students. The novelty of this project in dealing with the Great Divergence and the Industrial Revolution is that it combines a regional approach with existing economic theory. The two PhD’s will:

a) Collect regional (i.e. provincial and sub-provincial) data on industrialization.

b) Quantitatively and qualitatively analyze how and why the industrial patterns change over time.

One of the PhD’s will focus his/her analysis mainly on China, and the other one will focus on the Low Countries (the Netherlands and Belgium).

Requirements:

  • A relevant Master’s degree, e.g. in history or economics.
  • The ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • One of the PhD’s should have the ability to speak and read Chinese. The other PhD student should have the ability to read Dutch, and preferably French.
  • Have the ability/willingness to apply/learn quantitative techniques such as regression analysis.
  • High scholarly abilities, as testified by your previous academic record, particularly by the quality of your masters-level thesis.
  • Is highly motivated.
  • Is creative.
  • Affinity with work in an interdisciplinary and highly international environment.
  • The willingness and proven ability to work in a team.
  • The willingness to relocate to (the vicinity of) Amsterdam.

Appointment and salary:

The gross salary ranges from € 2125,- to € 2717,- (scale P, CAO-Dutch Universities) based on a full working week (38 hours) and depending on relevant work experience. The IISH offers an extensive package of fringe benefits, such as 8,3% year-end bonus, 8% holiday pay, a good pension scheme, 6 weeks holiday on an annual basis.

Job description:

Within the ERC funded project on regional industrialization in Northwestern Europe and China, ca. 1800-present  there is an opening for one postdoc. The novelty of this project in dealing with the Great Divergence and the Industrial Revolution is that it combines a regional approach with existing economic theory. The  Postdoc will

  • Apply economic modelling to the problem of regional industrialization.
  • Empirically test these models using econometric analysis.
  • Supervise PhD students.
  • Contribute to a volume/monograph on regional industrialization.

Requirements:

  • A relevant PhD degree, e.g. in economics.
  • The ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Proficiency in relevant econometric methods.
  • High scholarly abilities, as testified by your previous academic record.
  • Is highly motivated.
  • Creativity and high level of independency.
  • Affinity with work in an interdisciplinary and highly international environment.
  • The willingness and proven ability to work in a team.
  • The willingness to relocate to (the vicinity of) Amsterdam.
