Vacature: Professor of Archival Studies (Archiefwetenschap) – University of Amsterdam

Functiebeschrijving

Archival Studies at the UvA treats the records continuum from a non-custodial and de-institutionalized point of view, and as a discipline encompasses all phases of archivalism and archiving: from the conscious or unconscious decisions to archive material, through records creation, records use and records selection, including the study of the archive as cultural heritage. Social practice is the point of departure rather than formal organization, and the focus is on balancing societal interests rather than institutional ones.

Archival Studies at the UvA is the only academic programme in the Netherlands that leads to the official diploma of archivist (‘Archivaris A’).

The professor of archival Studies has a broad view of the domain as a whole, is comfortable with an interdisciplinary approach, and has specialised expertise in a relevant sub-domain. The candidate has the ability to identify links between his/her own field and other research areas and study programmes in the field of media and information at the Faculty, such as information studies, new media and digital culture, digital humanities, journalism, etc. In doing so, he/she is able to actively contribute to the continuation, development and advancement of archival studies both within and beyond the Faculty network, as well as at a national and international level. The candidate also has a successful academic track record and reputation, and possesses demonstrable leadership and administrative qualities, which can be used both within and outside of the capacity group.

Functie-eisen

  • A PhD in archival studies or a related field;
  • an international reputation in the field of archival studies;
  • an excellent academic publication record;
  • research matching one of the Faculty’s research priority areas;
  • an experienced and enthusiastic teacher on all levels of academic training;
  • experience in developing new teaching programs;
  • a proven track record of acquiring external research funding;
  • experience in the supervision of PhD-tracks;
  • an extensive national and international network with other academic and cultural institutions;
  • the ability to establish productive connections with other academic disciplines within as well as outside the department;
  • proven management and leadership qualities.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The appointment will be permanent. The gross salary will normally conform to professorial scale 2, between €5,103 and €7,431 gross per month (€71,217 – €103,707 per annum, including 8% holiday pay and an 8,3% end of year payment) on a full-time basis in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). In certain cases, however, different terms of employment may be offered.
