Lecture: The Spanish Famine: victory and death in Franco’s postwar Spain
This lecture situates the Spanish famine of the 1940s within the broader history of contemporary European famines, arguing that it should be understood not as an anomaly but as part of a continental landscape shaped by war, authoritarianism, and postwar reconstruction. While sharing features with other European experiences of scarcity, the Spanish case was distinguished by the victorious imposition of a new political order that transformed hunger into a tool of repression.
