University Lecturer in European Union Studies

University Lecturer in European Union Studies (MA International Relations) (fte 1.0)

The lecturer will hold a position within the Institute for History and teach courses as needed in the MA International Relations (specialization: European Union Studies), the Minor/Premaster European Union Studies and the BA International Studies. Within the specialization European Union Studies the lecturer will be primarily responsible for courses on EU law and EU institutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching in the MA International Relations (specialization: European Union Studies), including courses on institutions and law of European integration, research methods, and comparative regionalism, the Minor/Premaster EUS and in the BA International Studies.
  • Supervision of BA and MA and if applicable PhD theses.
  • Research and publishing through appropriate academic channels.
  • Contributing to curriculum development and programme management.
  • Acquisition of project funding at the national, European and international level.
  • Participating in the research programme History and International Studies of the Institute for History.
  • Communicating research results beyond academia.

REQUIREMENTS

Selection criteria

  • A PhD degree in European Law or European Union Studies.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of EU Law and legal and institutional developments.
  • A record of peer reviewed academic publications in European Law or European Union Studies, with a focus on EU law and institutions, commensurate with career stage.
  • A strong academic teaching record at the university level.
  • Well-developed plans for ongoing and future research.
  • Academic administrative / management experience.
  • An excellent command of English and (preferably also) Dutch. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Dutch, s/he will be expected to learn Dutch within a period of two years (teaching is in English at the BA and the MA level; Dutch language learning is funded by the Institute for History).

Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the lecturer is required to obtain a nationally standardized teaching skills certification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs, or BKO). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, she/he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Terms and conditions
The appointment (fte 1.0) is in temporary employment for 18 months (August 1, 2022 to January 31, 2024), with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation. The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 2836 (scale 10) to € 5922 (scale 12) for a full working week. Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.

Depending on qualifications, as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly regarding teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience, the appointee may either start at the appropriate step in scale 10, 11 or 12. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
